Create a Partition

Updated on 06 Jun 2021

Quite often you will have one hard drive show up as a single volume. However you can also have one hard drive show up as two or more volumes. I.e. a single hard drive holds both C and D drive. In this tutorial we’ll learn how to create multiple partitions on a single drive.

Resize Move

In this instance I want to create another partition on Disk 0. We can see however that the E drive is taking up all of the space, so we first must resize this partition.

Click on the E volume and then Resize/Move button on the right hand side.

Use the arrows to resize the E parition.

Use the to move a partition (if there is room with an unallocated space)

Once you’ve resized the partition (made it smaller so that you have unallocated space), click the Ok button.

Execute

We can now see that there will be unallocated space at the end of Disk 0, and the partition for Drive E is now smaller. If you’re happy with the propesed changes, click the Execute 1 Operation button at the top to proceeed.

You will be given a confirmation screen where you need to click Apply.

Before finally seeing the progress of your operation.

Create partition

Now that we have some unused space at the end of Disk 0, we can proceed to create a new volume for it. Click on the Unallocated space on Disk 0 and on the right hand side, click on the Create button.

I’ll leave the settings at their default values. I.e.

  • the new partition takes up the entire unallocated space
  • the drive letter defaults to the next in the list, F
  • using NTSF as the file format

I click Ok and proceed to the next screen.

I can see the new partition created above, and in the screen shot below I can see the new F drive has been created.
